Writing
Our writing curriculum is based around our English Book Spine; from Year 2 upwards this is novel per half term. We use books as the stimulus for all our writing. Our SWFS curriculum is split into Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry. These categories are then split down further with each year group having specific focuses that build and progress as they move through the school.
In EYFS, we follow Talk for Writing as our basis for teaching English. This focuses on the development of oral language and children developing their ability to internalise the language structures needed to write. By children ‘talking the text’, we reduce the cognitive load and enable the children to focus on writing. In KS1 and KS2, we move away from Talk for Writing as our children become more proficient readers and thinkers.
We teach our children through a range of text types and forms. Each text type is then further sub-divided and this is mapped out across the school for progression. Our lessons follow the structure below including a balance of group work, modelled writing and independent writing.
We have created our own English Vocabulary booklet which explains all the vocabulary our children will meet as they move through the curriculum.
